The 2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe

A Beautiful Beast

The S-Class has long been Mercedes flagship line. The S63 AMG Coupe takes all that style, sophistication, polish, and grace and accelerates it from 0-60 in 3.9 seconds. That's right, this beauty sports a beast of an engine that delivers 577 horsepower, and Mercedes-Benz will debut the whole package at the New York Auto Show this week.

A lighter car is a faster ride

The AMG lightweight performance strategy shaved 140 pounds off the car's weight, while still allowing for higher output and more extensive standard equipment. You can thank a lightweight lithium-ion battery, forged AMG light-alloy wheels and an optimized AMG brakes, as well as an aluminum outer skin and aluminum front end. Top speed is an electronically limited 186 mph.

Faster, more powerful, more efficient

This AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo puts out 644 ft-lb of torque and the aforementioned 577 horsepower. This is 41 hp and 74 lb-ft. more than the previous CL63 AMG model, yet the S63 is more fuel-efficient. In our piece on fuel-efficiency, more power wasn't one of the benefits we predicted, but we'll certainly take it.

Choose your own engine note

How many cars do you know that offer a choice of "bespoke sounds?" Here's one that does. The AMG sport exhaust features logic-controlled exhaust flaps that change the engine sound from an "understated" sound in the Controlled Efficiency Transmission Mode to a "fuller, hallmark AMG emotive engine sound" when driving in the Sport and Manual transmission modes.

AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive

While we recently wondered if the manual transmission was still relevant, that's not a debate that factors in for U.S. buyers of the S63. The S63 AMG coupe will come standard with the AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. This system delivers 67 percent of the engine's torque to the rear axle, offering improved safety and the AMG driving dynamics a rear-wheel-drive lover will expect.

Seriously, it's magic

The S63 tilts into corners courtesty of MAGIC BODY CONTROL. The system detects lateral acceleration, scans upcoming road angle and tilts the body automatically up to 2.5 degrees while you round your favorite curve. However, don't think this is so you can go faster. This system was designed to increase your "motoring enjoyment and comfort." If you corner faster, just don't tell anyone.

Now available with Swarovski

According to, the S63 will be available this fall in an "Edition 1," that will include Swarovski Crystal LED performance headlamps. Swanky just got swankier. This is one we can't wait to drive.
